Moonlake is a crescent-shaped shawl inspired by ancient Chinese mythology where the lunar goddess gave birth to twelve moons and bathed them in celestial waters. The design combines floral lace with garter stitch sections, and finishes with a rippling edge, creating rhythm and textures throughout the piece. Worked from the top down, the shawl begins with a stockinette tab cast-on and uses short rows and increases to form its curved shape.
The pattern includes instructions for two sizes:
Larger shawl worked with 12 colourways (one for each “moon”).
Mini shawl worked with 6 colourways and finished with a button closure.
Colour Planning Tips
Moonlake can be worked in a gradient of colours or in a single shade. Yardage estimates for each section are provided to help with yarn substitutions and to support your colour planning. This allows flexibility whether you’re using a coordinated mini skein set or combining leftovers from your stash.
Styling Tips
The larger shawl can be worn with the straight edge along the shoulders or reversed so the frilled edge frames the neckline. Both options drape beautifully. The mini version features a button closure that can be fastened through any yarn-over hole, offering multiple styling possibilities. Enjoy experimenting with different ways to wear and showcase your Moonlake!

NOTES AND TECHNIQUES
Moonlake is worked from the top down, beginning with a Stockinette tab cast-on, and continues by alternating lace and garter sections. The lace sections are worked from a chart. To add depth at the centre, German short rows are incorporated within the garter stitch sections to shape the shawl.
The lace chart is repeated multiple times across each row. In the beginning, you may find it helpful to place stitch markers between every 2 or 3 pattern repeats to help keep track. Once you are comfortable with the pattern, you can remove the markers as needed.
Instructions are written for the larger shawl, with a tip for knitting a mini version.
